Husband and Wife Live A Life of Music
Quincy Concert Band would like to introduce you to two of its musicians, Christina and Jeff Duffy! They are husband and wife as well as local music teachers. Here is a Q & A, submitted by Susan Deege.
How did you meet?
Christina remembers that “I bumped his chair coming into marching band rehearsal at Truman State University. From that point forward, I couldn’t get my mind off of him!”
Jeff recounts that she caught his attention by showing up late for rehearsal. “I fell for her hard. We went on our first date to swing dance lessons two weeks later.”
This talented young couple can play most instruments. Christina’s primary instrument is euphonium, and Jeff’s is trombone. They are first chairs in these sections in Quincy Concert Band.
What would you tell parents about the value of music education?
“In my classes, I am not just teaching music. I am teaching life skills that include perseverance, team-building and problem solving skills that transfer to anything my students choose to do in life," says Christina.
“Music education creates another kind of family for the students and teaches them how to interact and be a successful part of a group,” explains Jeff.
What is the best part of your job?
“I love that I get to inspire young students to pursue music. Beginner students are so excited to learn their instruments, and I get to build that student-teacher relationship over the next six years.”
Christina notes that, “getting to know my students on a personal level and helping them grow as young adults, not only as musicians,” is a job highlight.
What is the best advice you ever got from a teacher or mentor?
“Reach for the moon! The worst thing that happens is that you will land on among the stars.”
“I learned through the examples and goals that teachers and mentors set for me. They instilled me to be the best I can be.”
What is your best musical experience?
The couple shared their enthusiasm about being involved with the Bluecoats Drum and Bugle Corps. Jeff said he loves traveling the country and performing in front of thousands of fans with 150 of my best friends!
Christina recalls, “In January 2017, I performed with the Bluecoats in the World’s Largest Chinese New Year Celebration in Hong Kong. The venues were amazing and we got to know musicians from Hong Kong who are also passionate about music.”
Christina’s hometown is Round Lake Heights, IL, and Jeff is from Quincy. She notes that they are happily living in Quincy, her husband’s home town, and in an area that gives them both the opportunity to do they work they love.
