Celebration of Education Sculpture project
Arts Quincy and the Moorman Foundation are proud to announce a partnership for the 2019-20 school year to install eight sculptures at area schools. The schools who will receive a sculpture include all five of the new Quincy Public Elementary schools, as well as Quincy Junior High, Senior High and Notre Dame.
The project is a public celebration of education, which was a cornerstone of Fabiola Moorman's commitment to community betterment. Arts Quincy is collaborating on this public/private partnership in furtherance of its mission to create opportunities for arts access throughout the community.
Several committees have had a hand in the project, which began with a national call for artists this past spring. The process included input from each school and principal, from maintenance and security, an art selection group. The sculptures and artists have been finalized, and the estimated completion and installation of all eight pieces is April 2020.
"We are honored to be a part of this partnership between the schools and the Moorman Foundation," said Laura Sievert, Arts Quincy Executive Director. "Public art beautifies, unifies and inspires, and it's a terrific way to celebrate all of the amazing ways the foundation has touched Quincy. Now is the perfect time for this major public art project as Quincy has really committed to the quality of our educational institutions with the construction of the new elementary schools and improvements at QHS, QND, and QJHS."
The first piece slated for installation is "Vault" by artist Dan Perry of Waterloo, Iowa for Quincy Senior High School. The 14-foot tall stainless steel and aluminum piece features a blue torch which will be lit internally by LED lights. The artist is adding a Quincy Senior High School "Q" logo for the sculpture's pedestal. Weather permitting, this piece will be installed by the first week of October.
Students at each school have the opportunity to be a part of the project by designing a medallion that represents their school for a dedication plaque that will be placed at each sculpture. One student's design will be chosen for the plaque and will serve as a plaque rubbing for a Sculpture Passport that encourages families to visit all of the installations. In addition to the plaques, Arts Quincy is commissioning a sculpture walk app that will give information about the artist, school, and sculpture and can be accessed digitally from any device.
"We hope these eight sculptures resonate with students, faculty, and families and are a reflection of the pride we have in the world-class schools we have here in Quincy," says Sievert. "An as a mom, I can't wait to take my kids' photos in front of these great pieces of art for years to come!"
As future funding becomes available, it is possible that additional artwork installations will be placed in other spaces, including at the remainder of Quincy's parochial schools and other public locations.
