Arts Quincy is excited to introduce a new offering to families through an expansion in its arts-in-education programming with “Grab & Go STEAM Kits!” The free kits are available now at Quincy Children’s Museum, 115 N. 4th St. Supplies are limited. Kits include materials and the directions needed to complete projects that fall into STEM categories with an element of art. There are three options to choose from including a seasonal project and activity including a homemade snow gauge and snowball launcher as well as a creative project of customizing a sock puppet. Some household supplies may be required but most will be items that most people have on hand.
“STEAM Stands for science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics, and we are excited to provide these kits to the community,” said Laura Sievert, Arts Quincy Executive Director. “We hope these kits will inspire learning with activities tailored to kids and families.” New kits will be available regularly and there are plans to offer kits at additional locations including Quincy Public Library. Additional aspects of the arts in education programming include opportunities for individual kids to be spotlighted in the newspaper weekly as Arts Quincy’s STEAM Stars. “STEAM Stars started at the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020 as a way for the arts council to provide a way for students to engage in art education activities while schools were shut down. Since 2020, Arts Quincy has been featuring STEAM Stars each Saturday in the Herald-Whig publication. Going into the fourth year of the program, it is exciting to increase learning opportunities, encourage creativity, and offer a new option for families to take advantage of in the new year,” Sievert said. “We love this new way to collaborate with our partner organizations and bring attention to our mission to increase access to fine arts and arts in education.” Arts Quincy encourages those who complete a kit to email photos to them to have a chance to be a STEAM Star this year.
