Meet Jeffrey Seibert, a member of the Quincy Woodworkers Guild. Close to four years ago a friend in the guild invited him to a meeting and he has been attending ever since. Jeff enjoys the fellowship, seeing others’ projects and the sharing of knowledge and skills. Jeff enjoys volunteering with Woodcrafting Days at the Illinois Veteran’s Home. Jeffrey Seibert is a retired pharmacist whose career spanned more than four decades. Woodworking has been a hobby of his for at least the past thirty years and nowadays he enjoys this hobby in a peaceful, woodsy setting in the Liberty area. Jeff himself is a very accomplished scroller, as can be seen in his work. A scroll saw is used to cut intricate curves, and uses blades of various size that can be threaded through a hole drilled in the wood. This enables cuts to be made within the boundaries of the piece of wood.
Jeff’s first project was scroll sawn, and he clearly fell in love with that type of work. Using his scroll saw and a lot of patience, Jeff has made numerous nature scenes that are absolutely beautiful works of art. Although self-taught, a lot of Jeff’s influence came from his father, who was a carver. Today, Jeff incorporates some carving into his scroll sawn projects. In some cases this can create an appearance that the wood is woven. He has made a lot of cross pendants and ornaments this way. The Quincy Woodworkers Guild welcomes all levels from beginners to advanced artisans. The fellowship and knowledge of guild members makes the activity especially rewarding. The Woodworkers Guild is currently interested in finding teens and young adults with an interest in woodworking to mentor so that they can continue their tradition of passing skills to the next generation of crafters. The Quincy Woodworkers Guild meets on the first Monday evening of the month unless it conflicts with a holiday. During the warmer months meetings are hosted at a member’s shop, and in the winter the group meets at the Quincy Senior & Family Resource Center.
