 Quincy Woodworkers Guild’s Member Spotlight When Dennis Rankin retired from farming in 2007, he found a new passion in woodturning—thanks to an old Craftsman lathe passed down by his father-in-law. Inspired by his brother-in-law’s woodworking talent, Dennis began experimenting in the basement workshop of his Hancock County home. After moving to Quincy in 2015, his wife Carol gifted him a NOVA DVR lathe, and his hobby truly took off.  Now a member of the Quincy Woodworkers Guild for two years, Dennis joined in search of fellow woodturners but found a community of artisans with a wide range of skills. “Seeing what others create helps me grow,” he says.
A quilter herself, Carol challenged Dennis to make wooden quilt blocks. He’s since created several intricate pieces from domestic and exotic woods—each one a precision project that makes use of leftover scraps. She jokes that woodworking keeps him from becoming a Chippendale dancer. Dennis is proud to be part of Quincy’s creative community. “There’s so much talent here,” he says. “And everyone’s willing to share what they know.” The Quincy Woodworkers Guild is a welcoming community for artisans of all skill levels. Monthly meetings feature demonstrations, project showcases and hands-on learning.
