Letter From The Director

Dear Art Patrons:
Every time we print an Arts Quincy magazine, I marvel at the number of things there are to do, but no issue captures the vibrance and warmth of the arts quite like the holiday edition.
There’s a certain sparkle to a calendar that’s loaded with more events than anyone could possibly expect to attend themselves. Instead, maybe we ought to just treat this issue of the magazine like a kid with an Amazon Gift Guide (the Sears Catalog of today’s kiddos) and circle and star our favorite events as we daydream about all the fun we’ll have alongside our family and friends.
With apologies for any I’ve missed because even an arts council director can’t do them all, here are some of my top picks for my family in this issue:
Quincy Concert Band, Sunday, Nov. 5:
I’m normally a trumpet player in this band but had to sit this semester out due to scheduling conflicts. That means I’ll have the opportunity to see this nationally award-winning ensemble from the audience for a change though, and I can’t wait for their “Blue” performance. The band is coming off a packed-house from their spring Pops concert, and is still committed to offering free admission to all their programs, so bring the whole family!
Quincy Senior High Musical, November 8-12: It’s the first time Irving Berlin’s classic “White Christmas” has ever been performed in Quincy, and if I know QHS, this one is not to be missed. The students will also be preparing for Vespers, a favorite holiday tradition.
Quincy Symphony Orchestra, Saturday, Nov. 18 and Chorus, Saturday, Dec. 2: QSOA always puts their heart and soul into these performances. I am looking forward to enjoying the soloists at these two shows on trumpet and harp, respectively!
Quincy Community Theatre, Peter Pan: You can fly, and so can QCT! A trip to the theatre is better than anything else you can wrap under the tree in my estimation… unless you’re wrapping up season tickets for next year.
Quincy Notre Dame Christmas Concert, Monday, Dec. 4: Showcasing the musical excellence of the parochial music organization, this is one I always star on my calendar each year. These kids are amazing!
Of course, these events aren’t all. There’s Light the Park in the District. The Quincy Museum and its special production of A Christmas Story. John Wood Mansion has is popular Candlelight tours. Quincy Park Band will have their holiday show at the Kroc Center. QU, JWCC and Culver all have holiday shows. There’s Sunday Music Series and Quincy Civic Music Association. Quincy Art Center has exhibits. There is just SO much!
So as long as you’re making a list and checking it twice, turn to the center spread of the magazine and find your perfect holiday line-up. It’s the very best way to make your family time this season merry and bright!
