It’s going to be a very different Mother’s Day for most families. There won’t be fancy dinners out, trips to see a local play or other special activities we normally associate with mom’s special day. Instead, we’ll be sheltering in place and social distancing.

Fun, right? Well, actually, it can be. We’ve come up with several fun ways for you to enjoy this year’s Mother’s Day without ever leaving the house. Check out our creative suggestions below and get ready for a very different, but still very special Mother’s Day 2020.

(Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 10.)

  • You probably won’t be taking mom to a concert this year but if you know how to play an instrument or sing, you can record your own solo concert for her to enjoy!
  • Although some local clubs are not currently meeting at the moment, they still offer great resources and support to their members. You can purchase a membership to a local organizations that have the same interests your mom does. Some ideas include the local chapter of the American Association of University Women, Great River-Genealogical Society, Quinsippi Needleworkers, Quincy Woodworkers Guild, Great River Watercolor Society, Artists Guild, Historical Society of Quincy and Adams County, Muddy River Opera Company and so many more! Visit artsquincy.org/partner-orgs for a full list and contact information.
  • Most organizations are planning a bigger and better line up in their fall performance line ups. Now is a great time to purchase season tickets at a discounted rate for future performances with Quincy Civic Music Association (quincycivicmusic.org), Quincy Symphony Orchestra Association (qsoa.org), Quincy Community Theatre (1qct.org), and more!
  • Plan a driving tour with self-guided maps from See Quincy/Quincy Area Convention & Visitors Bureau. They offer several pre-planned trips to local historic districts that showcase our local architecture, famous residents and more! Download the guides at seequincy.com or pick them up outside the Villa Kathrine.
  • You can also explore the grounds at local historic sites or plan an indoor tour at a later date to see places like the Governor John Wood Mansion and grounds, History Museum on the square (hsqac.org), the Underground Railroad home of Dr. Richard Eells, Quincy Museum (thequincymuseum.org), Lincoln-Douglas Debate & Interpretive Center, Mark Twain Boyhood Home & Museum (marktwainmuseum.org), Lincoln-era Log Cabin Village (logcabinvillagequincyil.com), Prairie Mills Windmill & Museum (goldenwindmill.org), Camp Point Historical Sites, Villa Kathrine (villakathrine.org) and more!
  • Every mother enjoys handmade gifts including cards and other keepsakes like handprint pieces, jewelry, and textiles! The Quincy Art Center offers tutorials on fun projects like these on its Facebook page and also offers gift certificates to classes like pottery, painting, and more (visit quincyartcenter.org)! You can also purchase original artwork and unique pieces from local artisans through private art galleries!
  • Another idea that you can’t go wrong with are gift certificates to take classes at the Kroc Center for fine art like music lessons or other activities, YMCA, and local colleges offer noncredit courses that will make mom a life-long learner including John Wood Community College, Quincy University and Culver-Stockton College. Learn more at krocquincy.org, quincyymca.net, quincy.edu, jwcc.edu, or culver.edu.
  • You can support the local economy with gift certificates to bakeries, restaurants, boutiques, flower shops and other stores throughout The District. Many offer curbside pickup or have delivery options. Quincy Area Chamber of Commerce offers Chamber Bucks to spend with its business members. Learn more at thedistrictquincy.com or quincychamber.org.
  • When you spend $100 locally, you can get $20 back through the Q-town Cash Program! Show your support by purchasing $100 from any member businesses or organization of Great River Economic Development Foundation, Quincy Area Chamber of Commerce and The District to receive a $20 Q-Town Cash certificate to spend with any of our member businesses. You can purchase gift cards or certificates, buy online, or shop in-store safely & responsibly with any of our member businesses to receive Q-Town Cash.
    1. Purchase $100 (before tax) from our member businesses,
    2. Fill out the online form (PDF form below) and upload a copy of your receipt(s),
