Use Theatre Training to Set Your YouTube Channel Apart

Spending a little more time at home this winter? Now is a great time to start up that YouTube channel! With so many content creators and influencers all over social media, it may feel like an uphill battle to get your particular voice heard, but theatre training can really come in handy to set your videos apart from the rest!

QCT offered a class last fall called “Going Viral (the Good Kind)” dedicated to improving the skills any good YouTuber needs including storytelling, on-camera acting and confidence with improvisation. Here are some tips from QCT that are adapted from theatre training to help you on your way to internet stardom!

Know your audience! Is your content for hardcore fans of a specific game, film series or sport? Is it for people who want to learn more about a topic you’re passionate about? If you visualize your average subscriber as you write and produce content, you’ll ensure your channel stays focused and relevant to those that matter most, your viewers!

Connect with the camera consistently throughout your video. In theatre, you often cannot actually see the audience due to the bright lights on stage, however, actors still need to work hard to connect with them and send energy all the way to the back of the house. The same is true for content creators. Imagine that there is an auditorium packed with people watching just behind the camera lens. You need to reach through the screen with your voice, your personality and your energy!

Let your personality shine on camera, but don’t distract too much from your content. For example, if you create a tutorial video, try to include a personal anecdote that connects your individual experience to the lesson you want to teach. Stick to a focused structure and avoid losing your audience’s attention with too many tangents or off-topic commentary. It’s important to strike a balance between establishing yourself as an expert on your channel’s topic and as a human being who is real and relatable.
