At Chaddock, we are always looking for new ways for our kids to experience life through art. Combining visual art making with other subjects like STEM are a great way for students to get a better understanding of these topics. According to the Institute for Educational Advancement, “Integrating hands-on activities and experiments into classroom instruction helps students remember concepts and aids in long-term retention of material.”

Recently, one of our students, Eli Smith, created a dinosaur diorama. This included creating a three-dimensional scene of dinosaurs and a volcano using some found objects and store-bought items. 
Eli is a 6th grade student in Mrs. Arnold’s class at Chaddock School. He enjoys riding his bike, playing basketball sports, and playing with his dogs. Eli enjoys having Mrs. Arnold as a teacher because she is funny and nice. She also has animals in her classroom like a bearded dragon, rabbit, turtles, and hamsters. 
What did you learn during this project? I learned how to build with clay. I learned about dinosaurs and the time period that they lived on Earth.
What makes this project fun for other kids to try? It’s fun to build things with your hands and learn about animals that lived long ago.
What is your favorite subject in school? I enjoy science.
What do you like most about Art & Science? I enjoy doing hands on projects. It helps me to learn better. At my old school, we did a project where we built a house out of popsicle sticks, cardboard, and aluminum foil. The goal was to make it waterproof and withstand wind.
